Working to enrich the local community by offering our time, care and financial resources has always been a cornerstone of Washington Speakers Bureau (WSB). Engaging a wide range of charities and non-profit organizations, WSB employees look forward to impacting the lives of others through medical research, educational programs, hunger relief assistance and environmental projects they help support.
Each year, members from our volunteer Community Leaders Committee gather recommendations from staff before selecting and coordinating projects. Since there are so many programs close to our hearts, we try to incorporate as many as possible in our yearly giving efforts. Recent projects have included:
- Sponsoring a kindergarten class
- Participating in an American Red Cross blood drive
- Cleaning up the city during “Spring for Alexandria”
- Gifting Thanksgiving meals to a local shelter
- Facilitating a holiday toy drive for several charities
To further support the volunteering efforts of staff, WSB grants and encourages the use of paid volunteer leave for philanthropic activities that occur during office hours.
IASB Community Service Award
We are proud to be a frequent recipient of the International Association of Speakers Bureaus’ Community Service Award. Given to member organizations with an exceptional record of dedication to their communities, WSB received the award in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.
Everyone loves being able to wear jeans on Friday and for this privilege, WSB employees each contribute $10 per quarter to a charity or non-profit organization selected by the Community Leaders Committee. Whether helping to support homeless shelters, disaster relief efforts, literacy programs or environmental advocates, we are always happy to wear jeans for a good cause!
The V Foundation for Cancer Research
A longtime friend to WSB’s co-founder, Harry Rhoads, Jr., and many WSB speakers, Jim Valvano was head coach of North Carolina State Men’s Basketball team when he lost his battle to cancer. Jim’s namesake The V Foundation for Cancer Research has awarded more than $90 million to more than 100 facilities nationwide in its quest to find a cure for cancer. In honor of our beloved friend, WSB staff helps The V Foundation each spring by participating in their annual Show Your Spirit grassroots fundraising campaign and has contributed thousands of dollars to the cause.
