A View From Above of the Water Planet: A Unique Perspective on the Environment
Jerry Linenger’s travels around and beyond Earth have cultivated his passion for understanding the planet – and the importance of preserving its resources. In addition, he has a lifelong interest in freshwater issues from his early research as a young environmental studies student to his lengthy career as a U.S. Navy bio-scientist. Using the Mir as a metaphor for Earth and his leadership experiences with the freshwater advocacy organization, Circle of Blue, he discusses current environmental issues in a global, unifying context. Specifically, he shares:
· his firsthand experiences living in a closed ecosystem

· how we must understand our impact on the planet and how to be better stewards of it

About Jerry Linenger
Jerry Linenger is a retired U.S. Navy flight surgeon and NASA astronaut who shares one of the most compelling space exploration stories of all time. Since his travels through space, he has traveled the globe with a commitment to the preservation of Earth’s resources. He is a gifted orator who inspires audiences to consider life’s priorities.
An American Hero: Jerry Linenger survived an out-of-control spacecraft tumbling through darkness, low oxygen, the worst fire ever to occur in space, and a language challenge with fellow crewmembers who spoke only Russian. While aboard Mir, life’s true priorities crystallized for him and motivated him to survive.
Accomplished Surgeon: Jerry Linenger is a retired U.S. Navy flight surgeon and NASA astronaut. A Naval Academy graduate, Dr. Linenger holds a doctorate in epidemiology, a master's in systems management, and a master's in public health policy. He has been awarded three honorary doctorate degrees in science.
Courageous Explorer: During his mission aboard Mir, he logged fifty million miles in more than two thousand Earth orbits. He was the first American to undock from the space station in a Soyuz spacecraft and the first American to spacewalk wearing a Russian spacesuit outside a foreign craft. At the completion of his mission, he had spent more continuous time in space than any American male.
Dedicated Environmentalist: Linenger serves on the board of Circle of Blue. Circle of Blue brings people around the world together on the subject of fresh water supply, inviting the public and policy makers to seize the defining challenge of our time: our diminishing supply of fresh, clean water.
Author: Linenger is the author of the books Off the Planet, which chronicles his time in space; and Letters from Mir: An Astronaut’s Letters to His Son.
