Rajiv Shah, M.D. (Exclusively WSB)

As administrator of USAID, Dr. Rajiv Shah worked to launch major initiatives in an effort to refocus America’s global partnerships. Previously, Dr. Shah served in leadership positions at the United States Department of Agriculture and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In his capacity at USAID, Dr. Shah led efforts in campaigns including Feed the Future, Power Africa, the Private Capital Group for Development and the Better Than Cash Alliance to harness the expertise of the world’s brightest scientists, students and entrepreneurs. He forged strategic relationships by bringing together private investors, multinational corporations and local entrepreneurs to improve services and drive investments globally. By rebuilding scientific partnerships, mobilizing global partners and leveraging more than $10 billion from 200 companies, the organization achieved the most significant reforms in food aid in 60 years. Dr. Shah recently launched similar efforts in India, gaining experience overseeing major power projects in Afghanistan and other frontier markets. During his tenure at USDA, Dr. Shah also led efforts to contribute to the U.S. government’s biofuels strategy, which focused on transitioning to second- and third-generation biofuels. Audiences will receive unmatched, practical insights as Dr. Shah explores topics such as the management of risks and opportunities in emerging markets today, innovative financial structure and the latest advancements in science and technology as they relate to the growth of their industry.

Wendy Sherman, the successful lead negotiator for the multilateral, complex deal with Iran, reveals strategies and tactics from her years of high-level international diplomacy that can help you achieve successful outcomes in business negotiations in a global economy and marketplace.

Global bond markets are the ultimate arbiters of sensible economic policy. To the extent that voters push government officials toward self-defeating, protectionist policies, investors should ask for a higher return. Emerging markets like Brazil and South Africa learned the hard way that borrowing internationally requires them to maintain a certain economic orthodoxy that doesn’t always win votes. During the European financial crisis, bond spreads forced political leaders to make deeply unpopular decisions to save the euro.

What signs are visible in today’s markets to suggest discomfort with populist forces or worries about new challenges to trade rules? Will votes for Brexit and Donald Trump ultimately lead to higher borrowing costs?  How should multinational companies whose business models depend on long supply chains and frictionless border crossings adjust?

As Chinese financial markets grow larger and more integrated, volatility will no longer be contained to the accounts of niche emerging markets investors. Rapidly expanding financial flows to and from China, even in the context of capital controls, mean that shocks from Chinese markets will increasingly reverberate globally. U.S. and European regulators still struggle to establish coordinating mechanisms to manage bank failures and market turmoil on both sides of the Atlantic, but they have only the dimmest understanding of China’s largest financial institutions and Western exposures to a sharp Chinese downturn.

What can Western regulators do to improve transparency into China’s banking and insurance giants? In the next crisis, will Chinese officials engage openly with foreign counterparts to restore confidence in markets or will they revert to comfortable habits of pretending the problem will go away?
