Tony Abbott (Exclusively WSB)

During Tony Abbott’s tenure as Prime Minister, Australia became the first Western country to enter into a free trade agreement with China. As such, Abbott has strong ties with China and is uniquely qualified to discuss and explore the country’s short- and long-term future. Abbott is additionally able to provide an acute Western perspective on the most pressing geopolitical and global economic issues of the day as they relate to Asia.

A combination of economic anger, cultural anxiety, and political alienation are changing our societies, impacting our economies, and altering our politics. How can businesses organisations lead and succeed in this new environment?

The implications of Britain’s referendum decision to leave the European Union and what it means for business in terms of trade, investment, regulation, and long term economic growth.

Douglas Alexander discusses how the oldest alliance is coming under unprecedented strain and the impact for security prosperity and the future of the West.

Shaukat Aziz (Exclusively WSB)

As international markets suffer, growth in emerging economies continues to increase, causing global markets to become increasingly dependent on the economies of developing countries. Pakistan’s economy experienced an unprecedented boom in the early 21st Century, a success attributed largely to the efforts of Minister of Finance Shaukat Aziz. When Aziz began his tenure as minister of finance in 1999, Pakistan’s lack of credibility within the global financial market discouraged foreign investment, resulting in declining exports and abating normal capital inflows. As a result of Aziz’s implementation of debt reduction programs and the securing of hundreds of millions of dollars in loans, Pakistan’s economy experienced a growth rate of 6.4% per year. By the end of his tenure in 2007, Pakistan’s economy was one of the fastest growing global economies. Based on his knowledge of the global economy Aziz shares with audiences:

  • The current status of global markets and the role of developing countries
  • The role of organizations like the World Bank in providing financial aid to developing countries
  • The future of the global economy
  • Designing a structural reform agenda for sustainable growth
  • Emerging challenges for the global financial sector

Shaukat Aziz (Exclusively WSB)

In 1999, Shaukat Aziz was asked to return to his home country of Pakistan to institute reforms that would aid the country's struggling economy. Dedicated to helping Pakistan, Aziz left his top management position at Citibank and assumed the Finance Minister position pro-bono. Throughout his eight years working in the Pakistani government as Finance Minister and then as Prime Minister, Aziz led the fledgling country through massive social and financial reform. Aziz worked to capture the hearts and minds of his constituents and was able to enact considerable social reforms including the promotion of women's rights and education as well as expanding Pakistan's role in global diplomacy. While initiating reform that changed the government's approach to managing global issues and leveraging its position in the global community, Aziz implemented broad-based structural reforms that led Pakistan to become one of the fastest growing powers in Asia. Aziz engages audiences with a discussion of:

  • How to lead change management efforts at the global level, in business and in state affairs
  • The persistence it takes to implement reform with a population that is resistant to change
  • Cultural and political impediments to reform

José María Aznar (Exclusively WSB)

In this illuminating presentation, José María Aznar, Spain's prime minister from 1996 to 2004, explores how current international policy affects free trade in Europe, the U.S. and other countries around the world. Aznar shares with audiences the power and purpose of globalization and commercial relations, highlighting in particular the ramifications for underdeveloped countries. Aznar focuses on building stability and encouraging development in Latin America, where Spain has many links. He also details how globalization and commercial relations particularly favor those in underdeveloped countries, and stresses the importance of the “Atlantic link,” the interconnectivity of Europe and the U.S. as they strive to open up new markets around the world.

James Baker, III (Exclusively WSB)

Mr. Baker served as secretary of state as the Soviet Union collapsed and the Cold War ended, leaving the United States in a uniquely preeminent position – diplomatically, militarily and economically. Now, he says, terrorism and the development and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction have summoned the United States to a new and more difficult kind of leadership, both for our nation's own protection and to preserve peace and stability around the world. Mr. Baker reviews these and other global challenges, such as turmoil in Ukraine and the Middle East, North Korea's nuclear challenge, the need to integrate China into the international system, and the continuing battle for free trade and investment.
