International Security Challenges and The War on Terror
General Barry R. McCaffrey discusses the challenging international environment facing the United States and our allies -- and the diplomatic, economic and military tools required to secure our future. As an adjunct professor of international relations at West Point, General McCaffrey makes frequent trips to the many frontline nations confronting the "war on terror." His academic reports on his visits to Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Cuba, Colombia, Russia, Mexico and NATO are available at his Web site, www.mccaffreyassociates.com. General McCaffrey testifies frequently to Congress, both the House and the Senate -- and briefs the results of these independent trips to the White House, the Pentagon, the Department of Homeland Security, the State Department, the National Security Agency and media editorial boards. He writes periodically for publication in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, the Armed Forces Journal, the LA Times, USA Today, the Joint Forces Quarterly, and many other newspapers and magazines. General McCaffrey is an NBC News commentator and appears regularly on MSNBC, CNBC and NBC news programs, including Today and Meet the Press. He is a frequent guest on many national radio programs, including NPR. General McCaffrey regularly speaks at leading U.S. universities and lecture series (Harvard, West Point, Georgetown, American University, University of Texas, Texas A&M, Boston College, Providence College) and think tanks (Council on Foreign Relations, CSIS, AEI, Heritage, the Jeddah Economic Forum), as well as the major military schools (the National Defense University, Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Inter-American Defense College, U.S. Army War College, CAPSTONE Course, Joint Forces Command and the Command and General Staff College).

Leadership of Complex Organizations
General McCaffrey is a widely respected writer and lecturer on Leadership of Complex Organizations to business groups, universities, political leaders, law enforcement senior leaders and military leaders in the United States, Great Britain, Mexico, Australia and Canada. He served as a leadership instructor at the U.S. Army Infantry School and the U.S. Army Armor School. General McCaffrey has twice attended courses on leadership at the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, N.C. He also attended the Harvard University Business School Executive Education Seminar and the Harvard National Security Seminar.

General McCaffrey brings to his presentations practical examples and anecdotes from his wide range of leadership experiences:
· In business -- He serves on several corporate boards and formerly served on four audit committees. He is chairman of two companies and president of his own consulting firm.
· In government -- He served as a cabinet officer in the Clinton administration (responsible for a $19.5 billion program in nine separate appropriations bills), where he was involved with the coordination of drug policy in health, NIH, VA, DOD, education,
law enforcement and foreign policy. He also has extensive experience in international negotiations with the United Nations, NATO, the EU, the OAS, the International Olympics Committee and foreign governments in arms control issues, drug policy,
and international security and peacekeeping operations.
· In academia -- He served as a professor of national security studies at West Point for five years and is now an adjunct professor of international relations.
· In nonprofit organizations -- He serves on the board of directors of the Atlantic Council, the Phoenix House, the Infantry Museum and the Vietnam Memorial Advisory Council, and is chairman of the Vietnam Memorial Exhibit Advisory Council.
He is a member of the Council of Foreign Relations, the Council for Excellence in Government, the Inter-American Dialogue, the NADCP and other organizations.
· In the media -- He is a regular commentator for NBC News.
· In the Armed Forces -- He retired as the Army's youngest and most highly decorated four-star general. During his 32 years in uniform he served four combat tours (Vietnam twice, Dominican Republic and Iraq) and received three Purple Heart medals
for combat wounds while serving as lieutenant and captain.

The general was twice awarded the nation's second highest decoration for valor -- the Distinguished Service Cross for exceptional heroism. He was also twice awarded the Silver Star for extraordinary heroism while serving as an infantry company commander in combat. During Operation Desert Storm he commanded the 24th Infantry Division (Mech) during its 400 kilometer left-hook attack deep into Iraq to cut off Saddam's Republican Guard. He served as a three-star general and special assistant to General Colin Powell when he was the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His final military assignment was as the joint military commander for all operations in Latin American region. General McCaffrey will tailor his presentations to address the special leadership needs and challenges of different audiences. His presentation will focus on: the sources of leadership power, the three perspectives of leadership, the challenges to effective communication, and the Theory X and Theory Y approach to human motivation.

Mexico's Drug War: The Real Impact on the U.S.
Drug-related violence in Mexico and bordering U.S. states has been well documented in the media and is of serious concern for policy makers, law enforcement and business. Gen. McCaffrey, who served as America's Drug Czar, is well acquainted with the challenges faced by the Mexican government as well as the impact on the U.S. economy and society at large. This is a candid and illuminating presentation on what the future holds.

Challenges to the Engineering Profession: Rebuilding America's Failing Infrastructure
General McCaffrey writes and lectures extensively on America's failing infrastructure. He has written op-eds that have appeared in publications across America, including: American Legion, Armed Forces Journal International, Austin American-Statesman, Austin Business Journal, Business First of Columbus, Columbus Dispatch, El Paso Times, ENR magazine, Joint Forces Quarterly, Los Angeles Times, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Orlando Sentinel, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Portland Business Journal, Star Tribune, The Assembly, The Boston Globe, The Charleston Gazette, The Military Engineer, The Patriot News, The Seattle Times, The Washington Post, The Washington Times, Time, US News and World Report, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal.
General McCaffrey regularly testifies to state legislatures and advises governors, mayors and other governmental leaders on infrastructure challenges. General McCaffrey studied engineering and military science at West Point, has an MA in American Government with a focus on public policy and attended the Harvard University Business School Executive Education program. He currently serves as the chairman of the board for HNTB Federal Services and is on the board of directors of the parent company HNTB LTD -- as the first outside board member in its 93-year history. HNTB is a privately held engineering and architectural design firm with 3000+ employees in 63 offices across the nation and more than $1 billion in annual sales.

America's infrastructure is the backbone of the social and economic development the country has enjoyed for more than 200 years. Engineers of many disciplines have transformed U.S. society and the global economy multiple times. However, Americans must be collectively proactive in shaping and influencing the future direction of the nation, developing a strategic vision for creating the modern infrastructure that will allow the U.S. economy to grow and its citizens to prosper. To accomplish these goals, American politicians and businesses must first address several challenges:

1. Fix America's Infrastructure
2. Secure America's Critical Infrastructure
3. Develop a Domestic Freight Infrastructure
4. Modernize Infrastructure That Supports International Trade
5. Address Traffic Congestion Problems
6. Expand the U.S. National Aviation Infrastructure
7. Develop Industry Leadership
