Risk and Opportunity: Energy, Agriculture, Finance and Emerging Markets

As administrator of USAID, Dr. Rajiv Shah worked to launch major initiatives in an effort to refocus America’s global partnerships. Previously, Dr. Shah served in leadership positions at the United States Department of Agriculture and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In his capacity at USAID, Dr. Shah led efforts in campaigns including Feed the Future, Power Africa, the Private Capital Group for Development and the Better Than Cash Alliance to harness the expertise of the world’s brightest scientists, students and entrepreneurs. He forged strategic relationships by bringing together private investors, multinational corporations and local entrepreneurs to improve services and drive investments globally. By rebuilding scientific partnerships, mobilizing global partners and leveraging more than $10 billion from 200 companies, the organization achieved the most significant reforms in food aid in 60 years. Dr. Shah recently launched similar efforts in India, gaining experience overseeing major power projects in Afghanistan and other frontier markets. During his tenure at USDA, Dr. Shah also led efforts to contribute to the U.S. government’s biofuels strategy, which focused on transitioning to second- and third-generation biofuels. The Future of the Global Health Care Market

USAID runs the world’s largest global health program, spending more than $5 billion a year in more than 30 countries around the world to address disease and bring new health technologies to large populations of lower-income families. As administrator of this organization, Dr. Rajiv Shah led an effort with public and private sector leaders to transform this portfolio into a focused effort to maximize the reduction of preventable child and maternal deaths. During his tenure at the Gates Foundation, Dr. Shah helped to create the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations and develop the International Finance Facility for Immunization. In each of these professional capacities, Dr. Shah worked to create product development partnerships and has developed a strong network of partners in government, corporate leadership, regulatory agencies and academia. From 2010 to 2015, Dr. Rajiv Shah led the efforts of nearly 10,000 staff in more than 70 countries around the world as administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Under his leadership, Dr. Shah elevated the importance of partnering with and financing the private sector, advocating for infrastructure development, incubating technology solutions and science, and restructuring how USAID delivered its assistance to solve the world’s most intractable development challenges. From extending mobile networks in West Africa to improve real-time data collection for the Ebola response, to creating the Tropical Forest Alliance with Unilever, P&G and other major consumer product firms, to accelerating the use of mobile banking in emerging markets, Dr. Shah demonstrated his leadership, passion and remarkable skills garnering support from both sides of the aisle in Congress. Having been at the forefront of worldwide emergency and crisis management, Dr. Shah understands what is required to take risks, act decisively, make sacrifices and confront injustice, while uniting constituencies to recognize the importance of his agency’s success for American global leadership.
