Critical Condition: How to Fix America’s Ailing Health Care
Preview Speech Clip
After an epic political battle, comprehensive health care reform is now the law of the land. While the passage of this legislation solves some of the problems within the system, there are still many questions that remain unresolved. What will this reform mean in terms of controlling costs? What effects will it have on individuals and business? What sort of impact will there be on Medicare and Medicaid? What issues still need to be addressed that were missed in the initial reform efforts? Drawing upon his vast experience in both the public and private sector as an expert on health care and finance, Dan Crippen answers these questions and provides:
· An overview of the current health care debate and policies
· Challenges that lie ahead for implementing reform
· Ideas for further reforms including an examination of the conditions of our most expensive patients, their treatment and outcomes – literally changing the practice of medicine
The Economy at a Crossroads?

There are as many explanations about the current economy and where it is headed, as there are analysts and talking heads. One point of general agreement is that the catalyst for much of the turmoil was instability in our housing markets. However, there is little agreement on the continuing nature of economic weakness or policies that might reduce its duration. History affords some guidance. Weakness in housing markets and the failure of thrift institutions in the 80’s and 90’s threatened economies in the U.S. and around the world. In October 1987, the stock market lost 25 percent of its value in one day—compared to a third over the last several months. Savings and loan losses were in the neighborhood of $200 billion with 90% of all losses occurring in three states: California, Texas and Florida. Presently, the weakest housing markets are, again, in California and Florida as well as Phoenix and Las Vegas. In this insightful presentation Crippen draws an historical comparison with the 1980s addressing the following questions:
· Are the policies pursued in the 80’s applicable today?
· Do the various bailout programs address the fundamental issues in our economic challenges?
· Can failing businesses—banks, auto companies, insurance companies—be saved with taxpayer funds?
The Aging of the Industrialized World

The number of retirees will soon double, from 40 million to 80 million--more than at any point in U.S. history. At the same time, the projection for America’s workforce growth is a mere 10%. The resulting effect is that there will be only two workers for every retiree, putting a tremendous strain on all governmental programs and our society in general. In many other developed countries, such as Japan, Germany and the U.K., rapid aging will be even more severe and challenging. Crippen discusses:
· The profound implications for the job market and retirement policies, in both the public and private sectors.
· How the aging of the population will cause business to reverse past polices of encouraging early retirement
· How younger workers will be harder to find and more expensive to hire
· How immigration policy is likely to shift to policies that support
