Leading a Transformation: The Leader’s Role

On a practical, day-in, day-out level, what can leaders do to navigate sweeping change in their organizations? What are some of the blind spots that can be avoided, and how? It is often said that communication is critical, but there is seemingly little advice about what you should say—especially at those pivotal, difficult moments. Anne Mulcahy offers insights on the lessons she learned over the decade she led the remarkable transformation at Xerox.

Engaging the Power of Your People

In no small part, a CEO can only be as effective as her people. Achieving superior performance requires professionals who are fully invested in achieving both individual and company goals. This starts with building a talented and diverse leadership team to help the CEO chart the best course for the future. What are some of the key tactical steps the most venerable CEOs take to foster a culture of bar-raising dedication, resilience, responsibility and shared leadership? Anne Mulcahy offers firsthand lessons on how to best engage the power of your people to meet even the toughest challenges.

Best Practices in Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is not just a fad or a marketing tool—it is a critical set of activities that global companies need to take seriously and manage strategically. Former Xerox CEO and current Chairman of Save the Children, Anne Mulcahy addresses ways in which companies and non-governmental organizations can join forces to tackle the most difficult challenges we share as global citizens. Specifically, she will address how aligning causes to business activities, such as the long-standing partnership between Xerox and The Nature Conservancy to achieve sustainable forest management around the globe—can benefit the business and yield the most dramatic improvements.

Meet Anne Mulcahy

One of the most admired leaders of her generation, Anne Mulcahy has been widely credited with transforming Xerox Corporation, where she served as CEO for nearly a decade.

Anne Mulcahy was CEO of Xerox Corporation from 2001 to 2010—a dire make-or-break period for one of the world’s most venerable companies. In 2001, Xerox, a longtime industry leader and household name, was on the brink of financial collapse. Mulcahy—a talented executive who spent her entire career with the firm—took over, built a new leadership team, cut 30 percent of the least-profitable lines of business, refocused the company on higher-growth operations and inspired others to join in reenergizing Xerox for the 21st century. Mulcahy began her career at Xerox in 1976 as a field sales representative, taking on increasingly responsible sales and senior management positions before assuming the top job. Recently named to Fortune’s Executive Dream team, voted “CEO of the Year” by CEO Magazine, one of “America’s Best Leaders” by U.S. News & World Report and a longtime favorite on FORTUNE, Forbes and the Wall Street Journal’s lists of most powerful women, Mulcahy has been a role model and an advocate for social causes, now serving as chairman of Save the Children. Mulcahy offers candid insights on the most critical leadership and strategic issues audiences face, including how to lead transformational change when the stakes are high.
